Title: PM limits
Post by: chaosrevolver on March 22, 2013, 05:11:01 AM
Did anyone noticed? We can only send very short PMīs here now. Only 20000 characters allowed per message. I wonder if the limit could be raised without causing trouble...

20,000? As in twenty, with a thousand? As in, the number of Leagues Under the Sea? What kind of PMs are you sending that need more than 20,000 characters? It's rare for me to use more than a couple paragraphs. Unless someone's proofreading a novel or a program for you or something, I can't imagine why you'd need six pages in a single text box, unable to break it up and send multiple messages.

Oh itīs not a problem to break em up and send multiple items, but Iīm just lazy. I never reached the limit of the old board, does someone know it? ;)  Iīm not proofreading, but something similar, that obviously can reach the limit that was unknown to me for the new board until an hour ago. ::)

Okay, I've tried setting the limit to 65,000 characters which is about what the old Collective Forum was.

Any issues please let me know?

And I moved this post to the Announcements where we are keeping the forum issue posts.

Didnīt thought about it much as an issue, rather an obstacle that would be rarely met like Caesar said. Thank you very much for raising it.

Yeah, thanks...

Now Chaos can send me 65,000 character bug reports each day instead of just 20,000  hypno8

Each.  hypno8

Day.  hypno8

Did no one warned you what would happen if you hire me? :P ;)

The new limit seems to work, did not get error messages today. Thanks.

Periodically I would PM test reads of stories to people. The shortest one I've written lately is around 60,000 characters.

I have to warn you. Depending on database type there may present a limit on the size of posts and personal messages. Quite often this limit is about 64K. So I advise to check column type in corresponding DB table before changing limit in Admin interface.

I was aware of that possibility, but we are okay...

Are you sure? Default type for body of personal message in SMF is TEXT for MySQL. And maximum size for TEXT in MySQL is 64k. If you need more then you should switch to MEDIUMTEXT. Of course, if you are using MySQL :)

Just checked the settings and it returned to 65535 ... So there's prolly a limit somewhere that we are hitting...

64K is indeed the limit for that type of data in mysql. If that is indeed being used by that particular column, then 64K will be a hard limit for the size of a PM. I think this is more than reasonable. If you have to send something that will not fit in that space, you can break it up into multiple messages.

Or you can... I dunno ... write it as a book and sell it. Hey!! you may become a Star. The book's title would be something like : P(lease)M(esmerize) me ;)

No worries. I can make two posts where required.

Erm...

I just ran into a message telling me that I have "Exceeded the limit of 20 Personal messages per hour"

Is that supposed to happen?? That seems really limited.

I really need to keep talking to people right now... I'm feeling physical sick with worry already... not being able to respond makes things so much worse.

And checking my 'Sent Messages' I hadn't even sent 20 in an hour, so it's defiantly a bug. (I'd sent about 14 in two hours when I got the message)
