Please report all new forum issues here
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:40:55 PM »
Subject says it all. Please report any issues found.

Note that the new forum may occasionally drop into maintenance mode without warning as we find and fix issues. If that happens, just wait a bit and try again later. We'll post here if we need to take an extended outage for anything.

Further note: we'll be messing with themes in the near future as well. We're using the default theme at the moment but we'll likely try to install something a little more snazzy.

Thanks, FF.

One problem I just found and fixed: I had forgotten to give regular members permission to set a custom title in their profile. I just enabled this now.

If you see the colors suddenly change on the forum, we're likely experimenting with themes. Enjoy the psychidelic experience.

Also, feel free to use this thread if you find a theme is hard to read or giving you other issues.

One issue I noticed, that may not be a TRUE issue, is that with the conversion in the way posts are made any size change made to letters in the former forum resulted in FREAKIN' HUGE letters here!

Again not sure if this is a TRUE issue (certainly nothing an edit or two won't fix) but I think it's worth a mention   ;D

Not a major issue, unless you are trying to message someone here. Just wanted to inform you and others that you have to set it up again to do pop up and send you an email if you receive a message.

Can you post a link to a sample post exhibiting this issue? I want to see if this is specific to the browser or not. Not sure it's something that can be fixed, but I'm curious about it.

Hmm, strange, I had mine set up to email me and it's still set (though I didn't have the popup set before the conversion, so maybe it has something to do with the combination of the two).

In any case, thanks for the heads-up.

Sure link would be to...um....hmm *presses button (Explosion is heard in the background)* Okay...that's one button down...

There we go, about halfway down you'll see InACageOfDream's characters and her text, while before wasn't that big is now enormous! There was a post that I did where the text was big before but now took up the entire screen, but I've edited that already.  :-[ oops

Okay, I see it. Most likely SMF is interpreting the font sizes differently from phpBB. Probably not a huge issue.

If it really becomes an issue, I could craft some SQL to replace the larger font size with something smaller, but I'm guessing we can live with this.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I can't see what post is new inside a thread. I don't know if it is not possible or if I just don't notice it.
I can see what thread has a new answer when I browse a forum (it has the "new" tag), but when I'm inside I can't tell what post is new since the last time I visited the thread.

Thank you for all your efforts !

Not a major issue, but...when I post in a thread now, it automatically takes me to the thread's forum afterwards, instead of showing me the updated thread. Slightly annoying.

I'm not quite sure what the issue is from the wording of your post. If you click on the "new" tag, it should take you into the thread and down to the first new post (it does that for me). What is it you're expecting to see beyond that? I'm trying to compare in my head what happened with phpBB as compared to SMF.

I believe that may be just how SMF works. Every other SMF forum I've been to acts in the same way. I will see if there is some config option for that in the admin panel, however.

On the forum guide for explaining what topic symbols mean (sticky, poll, hot topic, etc) at the bottom of each page after you open a forum, there appears to be a typo. The condition for Hot Topic and Very Hot Topic are exactly the same:

(copy and pasted)
Hot Topic (More than 40 replies)
Very Hot Topic (More than 40 replies)

Ok, I didn't noticed I could click on the "new" icon (before I just clicked on the last page of the thread and the new posts had an icon with a red color) !

I guess I'll get used to this !

Thanks for pointing that out. While I was adjusting the settings for how many posts to display on a page, I think I set some other options wrong. I'll have to talk it over with the other admins to figure out what we want these settings to be.

Minor issue, but the pictures to the left of all topics work, except one (the one that was as I first saw this thread, no idea witch one it is) and that leaves a large "Picture not found" or "Picture error" picture instead. That one is much, much larger, giving each of those threads about 3 times larger size than other threads where the picture work.

Not 100% sure if this is a forum error, or a settings error on my end.

You'll notice the Ranking System Pending under everyone's avatars....

We'll be getting into a rank system later on, there are some other things we need to fix up first.

I don't expect I will get that working for at least a week...

Attached it to this post, had to make it small though but it is visible where and what is not being show. From the bottom explanations, it is the pictures for "Topics you have posted in" "Normal Topic" and "Poll" that all look like a very wide error pic. The size issue has gone though, not sure what has happened, but the large empty spaces to the left of every post is rather bad.

The thing is that those images do exist.

The only thing I can suggest is clearing cache on your browser and seeing if that corrects the issue?

I just can't find a fault on our end of things at the moment...

Yeah, I had noticed that. I'll have to see if I can change it in a template. If it's in the code rather than the template, it will be a quirk that we'll have to live with (or we'll find a better spoiler mod). The number one rule of the new forum and gallery will be NO manual code hacks.

You can change this in your personal forum settings. Look for "Return to topics after posting by default." in "Look and Layout" section of your account.

BTW, I've been using SMF on one of my sites for years so can help a bit. Do you need few tips?

1. (Easy) Use built-in update system. Try not to delay forum updates. New update? Apply it. You can do it with one click from admin panel (well, actually two clicks). If you miss few updates in a row you may need manual update (upload files, runs update scripts and so.) I don't think that you love to do manual updates if you can do automated ;)

2. (Medium) SMF has a very flexible permission system. And I have to say that it's quite easy to screw it up. Be very careful and check actual result. I recommend to have few additional forum account just for permission testing.

3. (Hard) Try to avoid any direct forum source code modification. The best way to add some custom feature is to develop a custom SMF mod. It may be quite hard to start with SMF mods but it will repay later. Try to loot at any existing mod for start. Why it's bad to just change something in forum's code? Any update may turn into a problem. And it's very easy to loose track of custom changes. With mods you can easily revert or redo nearly all changes with few clicks. And sometimes you may decide to re-install fresh forum on a new place. And with mods it will be MUCH easier to restore your custom features on the new place.

4. (Medium) SMF has built-in caching system. If you can install Memcached on the server it's usually nice thing to do. DB query number will be noticeably reduced for popular pages/sections.

5. (Easy) SMF 2 executes some maintenance tasks on schedule. You can take a look here. It better to configure some rare but heavy tasks to be executed ate the time when there is lowest load on the site.

Those tips are quite random but that's all I can remember for now.

P.S: Sorry for bad English. It's not may native language.

I forgot to add that admin can change default value for each "Look and Layout" option so it's possible to get old behavior for all users. Check it here.

Yeah, definitely this.

We had already decided on this one. One of the reasons the old Coppermine gallery is unmaintainable is because of how many manual code hacks were put into it. The forum was not so much affected by that, but it had some.

The theme going forward is all changes come from pre-built mods. If there isn't a mod for something, then we do without it.

Modifying templates to spiff-up the look of the front page is okay, though. We'll likely do that at some point once everything else settles, maybe put a custom image up like we had at the top of the old forum.

If there isn't a mod for something, then we do without it.
Do not throw idea of own custom mod completely. That's not SO hard :) Especially if there is an existing mod that does something similar to what you want to have.

[delurk] How about a "view first unread post" button like the old forum had? [/delurk]
