Title: Please report all new forum issues here
Post by: AStrangeGeek on February 09, 2013, 09:40:55 PM
Subject says it all. Please report any issues found.

Note that the new forum may occasionally drop into maintenance mode without warning as we find and fix issues. If that happens, just wait a bit and try again later. We'll post here if we need to take an extended outage for anything.

Further note: we'll be messing with themes in the near future as well. We're using the default theme at the moment but we'll likely try to install something a little more snazzy.

Thanks, FF.

One problem I just found and fixed: I had forgotten to give regular members permission to set a custom title in their profile. I just enabled this now.

If you see the colors suddenly change on the forum, we're likely experimenting with themes. Enjoy the psychidelic experience.

Also, feel free to use this thread if you find a theme is hard to read or giving you other issues.

One issue I noticed, that may not be a TRUE issue, is that with the conversion in the way posts are made any size change made to letters in the former forum resulted in FREAKIN' HUGE letters here!

Again not sure if this is a TRUE issue (certainly nothing an edit or two won't fix) but I think it's worth a mention   ;D

Not a major issue, unless you are trying to message someone here. Just wanted to inform you and others that you have to set it up again to do pop up and send you an email if you receive a message.

Can you post a link to a sample post exhibiting this issue? I want to see if this is specific to the browser or not. Not sure it's something that can be fixed, but I'm curious about it.

Hmm, strange, I had mine set up to email me and it's still set (though I didn't have the popup set before the conversion, so maybe it has something to do with the combination of the two).

In any case, thanks for the heads-up.

There we go, about halfway down you'll see InACageOfDream's characters and her text, while before wasn't that big is now enormous! There was a post that I did where the text was big before but now took up the entire screen, but I've edited that already.  :-[ oops

Okay, I see it. Most likely SMF is interpreting the font sizes differently from phpBB. Probably not a huge issue.

If it really becomes an issue, I could craft some SQL to replace the larger font size with something smaller, but I'm guessing we can live with this.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I can't see what post is new inside a thread. I don't know if it is not possible or if I just don't notice it.
I can see what thread has a new answer when I browse a forum (it has the "new" tag), but when I'm inside I can't tell what post is new since the last time I visited the thread.

Thank you for all your efforts !

Not a major issue, but...when I post in a thread now, it automatically takes me to the thread's forum afterwards, instead of showing me the updated thread. Slightly annoying.

I'm not quite sure what the issue is from the wording of your post. If you click on the "new" tag, it should take you into the thread and down to the first new post (it does that for me). What is it you're expecting to see beyond that? I'm trying to compare in my head what happened with phpBB as compared to SMF.

I believe that may be just how SMF works. Every other SMF forum I've been to acts in the same way. I will see if there is some config option for that in the admin panel, however.

On the forum guide for explaining what topic symbols mean (sticky, poll, hot topic, etc) at the bottom of each page after you open a forum, there appears to be a typo. The condition for Hot Topic and Very Hot Topic are exactly the same:

(copy and pasted)
Hot Topic (More than 40 replies)
Very Hot Topic (More than 40 replies)

Ok, I didn't noticed I could click on the "new" icon (before I just clicked on the last page of the thread and the new posts had an icon with a red color) !

I guess I'll get used to this !

Thanks for pointing that out. While I was adjusting the settings for how many posts to display on a page, I think I set some other options wrong. I'll have to talk it over with the other admins to figure out what we want these settings to be.

Minor issue, but the pictures to the left of all topics work, except one (the one that was as I first saw this thread, no idea witch one it is) and that leaves a large "Picture not found" or "Picture error" picture instead. That one is much, much larger, giving each of those threads about 3 times larger size than other threads where the picture work.

Not 100% sure if this is a forum error, or a settings error on my end.

You'll notice the Ranking System Pending under everyone's avatars....

We'll be getting into a rank system later on, there are some other things we need to fix up first.

I don't expect I will get that working for at least a week...

Attached it to this post, had to make it small though but it is visible where and what is not being show. From the bottom explanations, it is the pictures for "Topics you have posted in" "Normal Topic" and "Poll" that all look like a very wide error pic. The size issue has gone though, not sure what has happened, but the large empty spaces to the left of every post is rather bad.

The thing is that those images do exist.

The only thing I can suggest is clearing cache on your browser and seeing if that corrects the issue?

Yeah, I had noticed that. I'll have to see if I can change it in a template. If it's in the code rather than the template, it will be a quirk that we'll have to live with (or we'll find a better spoiler mod). The number one rule of the new forum and gallery will be NO manual code hacks.

Not a major issue, but...when I post in a thread now, it automatically takes me to the thread's forum afterwards, instead of showing me the updated thread. Slightly annoying.
You can change this in your personal forum settings. Look for "Return to topics after posting by default." in "Look and Layout" section of your account.

BTW, I've been using SMF on one of my sites for years so can help a bit. Do you need few tips?

1. (Easy) Use built-in update system. Try not to delay forum updates. New update? Apply it. You can do it with one click from admin panel (well, actually two clicks). If you miss few updates in a row you may need manual update (upload files, runs update scripts and so.) I don't think that you love to do manual updates if you can do automated ;)

2. (Medium) SMF has a very flexible permission system. And I have to say that it's quite easy to screw it up. Be very careful and check actual result. I recommend to have few additional forum account just for permission testing.

3. (Hard) Try to avoid any direct forum source code modification. The best way to add some custom feature is to develop a custom SMF mod (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=20319.0). It may be quite hard to start with SMF mods but it will repay later. Try to loot at any existing mod for start. Why it's bad to just change something in forum's code? Any update may turn into a problem. And it's very easy to loose track of custom changes. With mods you can easily revert or redo nearly all changes with few clicks. And sometimes you may decide to re-install fresh forum on a new place. And with mods it will be MUCH easier to restore your custom features on the new place.

4. (Medium) SMF has built-in caching system. If you can install Memcached on the server it's usually nice thing to do. DB query number will be noticeably reduced for popular pages/sections.

5. (Easy) SMF 2 executes some maintenance tasks on schedule. You can take a look here (http://www.hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/index.php?action=admin;area=scheduledtasks). It better to configure some rare but heavy tasks to be executed ate the time when there is lowest load on the site.

Those tips are quite random but that's all I can remember for now.

P.S: Sorry for bad English. It's not may native language.

I forgot to add that admin can change default value for each "Look and Layout" option so it's possible to get old behavior for all users. Check it here (http://www.hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/index.php?action=admin;area=theme;sa=reset).

Yeah, definitely this.

We had already decided on this one. One of the reasons the old Coppermine gallery is unmaintainable is because of how many manual code hacks were put into it. The forum was not so much affected by that, but it had some.

The theme going forward is all changes come from pre-built mods. If there isn't a mod for something, then we do without it.

Modifying templates to spiff-up the look of the front page is okay, though. We'll likely do that at some point once everything else settles, maybe put a custom image up like we had at the top of the old forum.

Do not throw idea of own custom mod completely. That's not SO hard :) Especially if there is an existing mod that does something similar to what you want to have.

That's because directly after the move of the forum literally every post is marked as unread. Just mark every subforum as read and from then on the button should work as intended for all new posts.

I've almost forgot about another one important thing.

All old forum links are dead. That's bad. Well, that's horrible. At least for me. Dead bookmarks, dead links in topics and so on.

What can you do? You can configure redirects from old forum location to the new one. It's relatively easy to do because boards and topics on the new form have same IDs as on the old one. So you can use something like Apache's mod_rewrite (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_rewrite.html) to extract topic's ID, assemble URL to the new topic's location and redirect the user to that location.

If you wish I can write an example of code for your .htaccess file. However you should confirm that you have enabled mod_rewrite first.

Well, that's in work actually, but it won't be activated until we turn off the old forum. At the moment we are redirecting from the old index page to this one, but we need to get some info off the old site then we'll deal with the mod-writes next.

If you'd like to send me, by PM a rule, I'll have a look at it nonetheless.

If you have static IP address you can and a condition to the rewrite rule so everybody EXCEPT you will be redirected to the new forum.

This isn't really an issue so much as a minor nuisance, but is it at all possible to change the number of topics that display on a page? In the games sub-forum, for example, the stickies take up, quite literally, half of the first page. If you could double the number of topics per page, that'd be wonderful! If not, I can learn to live with it, but I thought I'd at least throw it out there for consideration.
Title: Re: Please report all new forum issues here
Post by: Captain on March 09, 2013, 10:21:40 PM
To be fair we could probably omit half the stickies in the games forum.  Merge the game links threads, get rid of the "please post in the game links" and "be nice to the authors" threads, etc.

There is an option in the Look and Layout section of Modify Profile to adjust how many topics you display per page. I changed mine a little higher early on when the stickies plus all the posts with "new" posts pushed all the way to the second page with the default topic numbers.

Am I missing something, because I don't seem to have a "Look & Layout" section of Modify Profile. I checked several times before posting

[edit] Oh! I didn't realize there was a drop down menu under "Modify Profile." That could be a bit more obvious!

Thanks for the help!

It seems like the search function only returns the first thirty results at most (that is, if I search for a common term and set it to oldest first I get one page of results from nigh on a decade ago, and no way to go to any additional pages).
It could be that I'm missing something, of course...
To clarify, this is the search function on the FORUM. The gallery is fine.

I'm running an re-indexing of the Forum and altering the settings on the search so that it brings up all of the finds rather than only 30...

The indexing may take a little time, but the other changes have been made...

Hi,
Just now noted an issue that may need to be corrected quickly. The new (and maybe old also) search allows one to search the entire forum even without logging in. IMHO, a guest should be able to search only the announcements. Not only does search return the links from all threads, it allows the guest to access the content from the results.

<has the monkey flip a switch>

Okay, that will end that problem, but it also kills the search for all guests...

That's the only choice there is...

Also removed the list of last postings that had been on the main page as it also was a problem...

Thank you for letting me know!

Well, it does look like the search function is a lot better now.

Getting all programmer-ey for a bit, would it be possible to have a search crawler bot which did NOT have member status and have that index things for a guest search?

Not sure if it's just me or what, but the "Add to Favorites" links are coming up with an error. Copy-pasted below:

Moved Temporarily

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@hypnopics-collective.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

This is a problem that happens sometimes when someone's favorites list gets huge and the server has a problem sending the cookie to update things. We've been trying to fix the issue for some time now, but with little success as yet.

Thanks for your help. You folks run a fantastic website. Thank you so much.

I don't know if this is a problem or just an oversight on my part, but I cannot seem to find the button to upload a new image. (I last posted a picture on Nov 28th without any trouble.)
If the button exists, and it's my error, can you please tell me where it is now?

I thought maybe new uploads were put on hold because of the issues currently facing the collective?

The first image in the Gallery notes that all uploads are suspended for the moment due to the on-going problem we have.

This thread: http://www.hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/index.php?topic=20326.0

Will be updated with new information as we have it.

In short, we are stopping uploads on the Gallery at this time, setting up a move to the new server and location, then opening the new Gallery which will be part of the Forum.

I'm sorry for doing this, but the current situation demands that we deal with what we have before continuing onwards. In doing so, when the move comes, we don't lose anything from the Gallery and that has to be our primary concern at this moment.

Don't know if I am bugged, if it is user error, or if it is for everyone, but I cannot get my gallery to sort by Title automatically.  No matter what I do, it goes by date.  I looked on here to see if anyone else reported this, but did not see a post about it.

To sort galleries permanently:

Goto your Gallery, for Example, Sensually Serpentine, where all of your galleries are listed.

To the far right is a link marked Edit, click that.

On the next screen, go to the bottom. Select Sort By Title And Ascending.

Click Edit Category.

That does appear to work correctly...

When trying to Download one of Dr. X's files, the download file name is just "Dr". It is looking like the period in his name is shortening the name, or maybe its taking the rest as the file extension.

Hi folks,

I tried uploading a Flash file a few minutes ago - it seemed to work fine, but no image appeared - a new image entry appeared on the gallery front page, containing my details, but there was no image or even a Flash-thumbnail like we'd get in the old gallery,.  Is there something I'm missing?  Since the image didn't appear, I deleted the gallery post, rather than leave an empty item...

When I do this, in a Slideshows sub-gallery I created, all I see is:

so maybe I'm missing something?

I purged the browser, and the issue remains. HOWEVER, it only seems to be when
viewing longer PM threads in conversation format. In single-message setting format,
each individual message in the thread can be read. But if an attempt is made to view
one of these long threads as a conversation, it results in a dead white page with no text.

Until the issue with specific message threads is fixed, Jeri, you could try what I did:
Get a PM open to anyone -- as in, just click the icon under their avatar to send one to somebody --
and then mouseover Preferences, go to Settings, and switch from "View as Conversation"
to "View One at a Time". This allowed me to see my messages, including the broken
white-screen ones. It's just a more awkward and clunky way to read your PMs.

Just a comment on the New Gallery rather than a direct problem. So very low priority.

It is to do with comments. Is a it possible to be notified of new comments to pictures on which you have commented on the same way you do with forum posts? In the old gallery when you looked at recent comments you could see a fragment of the last comment beneath the picture and although not perfect you could hazard an educated guess if anyone was replying to something you said. Now it just lists the number of comments.

Also the comments on pictures update so the most recent appears at the top. So any back and forth has to be read from bottom to top which feels unnatural to me.

These in themselves are just comments rather than problems and I can quiet understand the sentiment that any real discussions should take place within the forum proper and not within the gallery section but it would just make keeping track of comment made within the gallery a little simpler. Just some thoughts.

Thanks again for all you hard work on our behalf. You guys and gals are incredibly amazing.  :)

While everywhere else it's:

I think the former was the original way, and it was changed to the latter later, right? Seems like "Unread" missed the change, at least for me.

I got the same error. It occurred when I tried to upload a gif that was too large for the board (8.46 MB). When I uploaded a 6.1MB gif, it came out fine.

Also, the board tends to rename my filenames into a long string of numbers. I don't mind this, but I received a comment asking for more descriptive filenames. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for all your work, Tera.

The filename rename should be working if someone uses the download button under your posting. Downloading from the popup window uses the internal system of the Gallery...

You can test this by saving your image from the pup up and then trying to download the image via the download button... The download via button gives a much more descriptive filename...

I've noticed a few of the images I've made for the RP threads in the "related images" even though my gallery is set as private.  It doesn't really bother me, I don't mind if people can see them.  I set the gallery as private to keep the images from flooding the manipulation feed since they don't really have any context and I don't expect that they'd be of much interest to the majority of users.

Not sure if this a feature or I'm just terrible at the internet, but I cannot for the life of me figure out if there is a way to search by multiple tags. For instance, I can search A OR B in the old gallery, but since search in the new one is keyword based, I can't figure out if there's particular operator I need to use or something to combine keywords. Is this already implemented? If not, is it at all possible to implement? Thanks!

Occasionally, I notice that when I open up the main forum page, it will say I have an unread reply in the "Dynasty City" sub-board, even though no new replies have been made. It appears only for that sub-board, and usually only when viewing the main forum, or sometimes the Roleplay forum. It's been doing that for a while, but I've just ignored it. Might be related.

I believe this is an indicator that there's a new post in one of the sub-sub-boards.

If that's the case, it's coming from the one I have on my ignore list (whenever I saw the erroneous "new" button, I would check "Unread Posts" for the whole forum, and see nothing), which would mean the ignore functionality has a loophole of some kind.

It's said there's an unread post in the "Dynasty City" board couple times in the last few days again, and I checked: there's been no new activity in the sub-board I've ignored.

Is the bulk image upload broken? I get this error for each image I try to upload: Upload failed: Error caused a send or load operation to fail (Error #2038)

Correction: The bulk upload works even with the error message. I miss a option to edit the pictures details before posting it to the gallery like we had on the old gallery.

It is probably connected to the fix that ASG had to put into the Gallery until we move to another version of it due to database issues slowing down the server...

Thank you for reporting this!

My changes were nowhere near the upload code.

A google search reveals other have hit this problem as well and appears to be caused by a timeout when uploading large files. It is a generic message from a php module rather than being specific to the SMF gallery.

Either I have no idea how to do this, or the Youtube Embed button is broken.

No matter what I enter, the button does not work.

Of course, what I actually wanted to do was embed a music box al la:

I am getting bad connection difficulties right now. The forum occasionally takes ages to load up

And it's not like normal lag either, which tends to make slow progress, in this case it's like it doesn't start loading up at all.

(Everything else is fine for me and my Mobile is affected too, when the problem is at my end my mobile nearly always still works)

Good luck with that. I ran into that issue on my forum. While I did find a mod that allowed for youtube videos integrated just by pasting the URL, and HTTPS was supported, I preferred the button like what you guys have here. Because sometimes I just want to link to a video and not have the plugin automatically parse it as a video.

EDIT: Well son of a B... they must have updated it.

They actually updated this mod twice, but the newest version didn't work, so we are using the 1.1 version instead of the 1,2 version which you can find here Allister, if it's useful:

Is there a function in the gallery software which automatic reduces the quality of big images?
I tried to upload my tutorial image with around 2 MB size and it was turned into a 300 kb file which killed all text fields due to the huge quality loss.
Title: Re: Please report all new forum issues here
Post by: TeraS on June 12, 2015, 10:25:49 PM
The maximum height and width of any image was set to 2500 pixels in resolution, so that might be the issue.

How large was the image size you tried to upload? I can change the max size...

It had 1920 x 5240 Pixel but I packed the single parts in a pdf now and uploaded that.

The 5240 probably did it...

I don't know, I can understand a size limit. My problem was more that the automatic resize gave such a huge quality lose. Maybe there is also a option to select the quality of the resize in the software?

Here both versions compared:

Title: Re: Please report all new forum issues here
Post by: TeraS on June 13, 2015, 01:05:52 AM
Okay, this is what happened...

The uploaded image was 1920 x 5240, which then went to 916 x 2500 to meet maximum image width allowable. Then the compression turned on to do that which reduced the quality to 65% of the original.

So the resizing killed the quality.

I’ve bumped the image size maximum to 6000, which ought to be more than enough to cover this sort of thing happening in the future…

There seems to be a small issue with the New Forum Gallery (only appeared this morning). This is how it looks on my screen:

I don't think its anything my end, but apologies if it is, I don't mean to clog the issues thread

EDIT: I think I figured it out. There's an upload entitled "Guy walks into a bar, sits down next to a girl & dangles a...(well you can guess the rest)" because the title is one long single line, that effect shown above is created.

I have nothing against the picture or authour itself but it's ability to screw up the gallery format raises concerns. I don't want to call for a character cap but this is effecting the user experience. It isn't urgent, however.

That is a problem that happened on the Archive as well when someone used a really long title.

I believe the person in question has altered their title as the problem seems to have gone away, at least for me.

If I am wrong, and it is still there, please let me know?

<waves to all of the lovely spammer bots>

So... It seems that someone has decided that we're a really good target for trying to get accounts here and spamming us.

When the site slows to a crawl, we are getting hit by something like 11,000 account requests at the same moment. When this happens the antispam has to deal with it all and it hangs the site for a while until it finishes choking on the influx of spammers...

Because the antispam goes and checks outside sources for bots and spammers, that's slowing things down.

Not a lot I can do about this... sorry all...

It comes up for some people that haven't looked at a lot of the images in the New Gallery. The only workaround is to mark all images as seen, then that drops the work the server has to do to make up the list.

I guess this is technically an issue. When searching the image gallery, I ran into this message:

"Search string is too small needs to be greater than three characters."

I was searching for the keyword "pet", something I would think would yield at least a few results. I can see preventing searches for two letter words, but I can think of at least a few three letter words that make quite fitting keywords to search for:

Pet
Own
Cum
Sex
Lab
Dom
Sub

Might be worth an adjustment to allow searches for 3 letter words.

I took a look in the Gallery settings and I can't locate anything to change the minimum length search. I don't think that's connected with SMF's main setting, but I'll look into this further...

The new thread is now dead in the exact same way!!!

In theory the search should be back to normal after being restricted for a little while...

The search index needs a search table and ours needed a reworking. That took, because of not wanting to overload the server, about two weeks to do.

The search should be back to normal. but if there's issues. please let me know?

I cannot see any posts discussing this.

I get quite regularly issues opening the forum or posting replies an "Internal Server Error", error code 500, a generic error message.

Possibly these are server loading issues, and I have often found it quite slow to initially open the forum.

Things are working ok, it is just sometimes I get the error posting and have to re-post again or check if the post actually did work.

I doubt it matters, but I am running Window 10 (32 bit), fully updated using the latest version of FireFox as my primary browser, and running the free version of AVG Antivirus.

It's an ongoing issue we are trying to track, no resolution as yet, this has been gong on for some time and the problem is trying to narrow down what is overloading the server.

Still looking...

The problem is that, more than anything, it is very random and that makes it hard to find. There's no rhyme or reason to when it happens as well.

Still, I'll keep poking at this and see what I come up with...

I'm newish to using a forum style posting system, so if this doesn't go where I think it should, or work the way I think it suppose to I'm very sorry.
I'm a long time lurker/occasional poster on the old galleries, but over the last few days I've started to notice that this site takes forever to load, and sometimes I can't get images to load at all. I just get a blank screen. I don't think it's on my end, as it's only this site, but I thought I'd report it. Sorry to bother.

It's perfectly fine, please don't be worried about posting here...

The issue is somewhere in our server, and there's a good possibility that when people are searching the New Gallery it's causing the slow down, but there's no evidence to support this exactly...

The problem is that looking over the server logs, there's nothing that points to what causes the overload and that's the thing we're trying to overcome.

Both myself and our hosting have been trying to figure this out for some time now, and I hope there will be a resolution to the issue in time...

Noticed a minor issue that showed up recently.

When trying to use the buttons for various commands (Bold, Color's etc) on a new line, they seem to jump one line up.
B

For example, the [ b ] there was supposed to be directly above this line and not directly below the line above.

It's very minor, but a bit irritating!

Almost every page on the site loads incredibly slowly much of the time, and sometimes, it doesn't load at all, instead producing a 500 error:
Code: [Select]
Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@hypnopics-collective.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The long load times also happen to post previews sometimes, like on this post.

The spammer levels are still pushing against things, it's happening a lot that within a minute there's 145 antispam checks going on and account creations being denied. When that happens, the site goes offline for a moment or slows to a crawl.

I've gotten into the habit of copying my posts before posting them, in case things go wrong, as a stopgap measure...

That said, I'm looking for another method of pushing the spam checks off the server to lighten that load to something more reasonable.

There are other options, which would cost more per month, but I'm negotiating something on that... We'll see if things work out or not...

Hi

Since the website cam back up after what must have been a nightmare weekend for Tera. When I bring up the forum gallery page it no longer fits on the page. The backgound image seems fine but the actuall images carry on off the edge of the page so I have to scroll to see the fourht image in each line.

This is the same on my chromebook via chrome and on my windows laptop via firefox.

Thank you

This issue happens when there's a lot of wide thumbnails on a page...

Going to the next page of images fixes the issue because there's less far too wide thumbnails for the overall width of things.

The fix would be to cut the preview thumbnails in size, but they are pretty small.

As an experiment, I've changed the gallery from four images wide to three, comments are welcome.

I can't reproduce this error which means I can't find a solution without having an idea of what's happening...

There's been no change to the code for the gallery, there's no errors in the database or elsewhere in the server.

If this happens, can someone get the page source from their browser and let me know what that says?

That's the thing, though. The page source is empty too. Not a line of code or anything. Even turned off all my Chrome extensions. If I use the Inspect tool on the empty page, I just get:

Code: [Select]
<html>
    <head></head>
    <body></body>
</html>

It's the emptiest, most barren non-page I ever did see.

I've been through the error logs looking for any kind of error thrown by either of your accounts between 6 PM and 7 PM Eastern today and I can't find a single issue popping up whatsoever...

I have sent the developer a request as to what this might be...

Beyond that, as much as I know either of you might not like this, could you please not access the Gallery for at a few hours to allow more works to popular your unviewed tab?

It could well be that clearing out that tab is causing this issue because when I check with my account, or Keith with his, or two other members that are troubleshooting this issue, as we have images we have not looked at, I think that's why the issue doesn't appear.

I have no idea how to solve his at the moment, but I'll hope for some thoughts from the developer to sort this out...

Just like to add my good self to the list of people that have a blank screen where unviewed images should be.

As an aside one or two images have shown up on the main gallery page as unviewed at odd times over the last couple of days. As I generally keep this page clear and these images were older I thought it might be a part ot the problem.

Either way it will be solved when it is solved. Dont sweat it.

I didn't think at the time to to highlight said images, sorry.

I have also been having this issue for about a week.  Thought it may get itself sorted out and I am not on every day.  So I didn't think much of it.  But since the issue is continuing, I checked here.  Glad I'm not alone at least!

Like others with the problem, the Unviewed button is my primary method of viewing the gallery.  Perhaps this is only effecting those who use it regularly for some reason?

The main pages of the gallery still show a "NEW" indicator under images I have not seen yet.  So whatever keeps track of whether or not I viewed is working.  It's something in the compilation of the "Unviewed" page.

I know little to nothing about coding, but is it possible that the system can keep track of whether an image is viewed indefinitely (or up to a very large number), but the method for sorting through these indicators and displaying unviewed images on that tab can only handle up to a certain number of "viewed" images?  That would explain why those who use the feature frequently would see an effect while others wouldn't.  If this guess is right, anyone who has viewed almost all of the images on the gallery will be having this issue.  Tera, can you verify if you or your other previous testers have viewed that many images?  Can any others experiencing this problem verify this as well?

No rush for a fix from me either!  Just trying to assist in any way I can :)

Second the comment from Hologram, I've seen all pictures in the gallery at least once  hypno4

Also I was affected from the bug where the unviewed page was really slow or not working anymore. AStrangeGeek implemented a fix for this on 1st of July 2016, which worked fine until a few days ago.

Just tried to access today 20:47:00 / 8:47:00PM UTC +1 Summertime. Once got a error 500, rest were blank pages.

I believe Copyfreak is referring to an earlier issue mentioned in this thread that started with MCaesar's post on June 22nd 2016 (Page 5) and continued until AStrangeGeek's fix on July 1st 2016 (Page 6).  After this fix, many people reported much faster processing times for the Unviewed tab.

I was not involved with that particular issue so I can't provide much more detail on it.

I'm still thinking it's some sort of memory leak issue since it only seems to be effecting those who have viewed almost all images in the gallery.

When I try to look at unviewed, I'm consistently getting an internal server error:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 524288 bytes) in /home/leehunter/hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/Sources/Gallery2.php on line 9119

The URL causing this (which comes from the Unviewed button) is:

http://www.hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=unviewed

This used to work (as of a few weeks ago, anyway).  Don't know if the amount of unviewed content is simply too much, causing the server to choke, or what...

For some reason, which I cannot put my finger on exactly, the UNVIEWED button on the Gallery appears to be working again.

I did change some memory settings on the server and alter the caching method which may have contributed to things working correctly again.

However, I’m not going to take credit for this, mainly because I can’t say for sure why things are working again.

Comment below if you like, let me know if things are working or not please?

very odd 'issue'

sometimes when I go to the latest in a thread from email (say, Mtech revisions RP) and read it, than later go to 'roleplay' it will have MTech marked as 'messages to be read' while refreshing will stop the problem.

I've seen it once or twice.  I'll try to remember to note times next I see it.

I dunno if this is a problem with Outlook or the website, but since yesterday, the new notification emails have been labeled as "phishing", and clicking on the link to the new post gives me an "Outlook has detected an unsafe link" page before I'm able to get to it. It's the DNS having not completed the changeover...

https://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/hypnopics-collective.net

All of the locations on that page should start with 147. Anything that isn't still points at the old server. We went through this before and it took for some almost two days for the DNS to reflect the change.

I have done everything I can to speed it up, there's nothing else I can do.

If you are getting this error:

Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again.

This is an issue with SMF and 2.0.15 which the forum is now running.

The simplest solution is to click the HOME button in the Forum Menu Bar and try again from there. Generally it will work the second time.

We are looking for a solution, SMF even more so, you can see this error on the MCForum as well from time to time.

The problem is that the plugin from SMF uses http links. That breaks because we're now https. You can allow mixed formats in your browser which makes the YouTubes appear again in your browser.

We are looking for a replacement plug in for that issue at the moment...

The game 'City of Sin'
https://hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/index.php?topic=20273.0
has a link to a games collective server which is part of this collective

The link no longer works, is there an updated link or is the game still available to play?

What's happened is that the starting URL doesn't point correctly.

It was:

https://www.games-collective.net/citysin/

It now is:

https://www.games-collective.net/citysin/index.htm

I have changed the first post in this thread, I am going to have Hax look into correcting the URL pointing to make this work correctly...

It should be fine now, please let me know if there are missing files or oddities and i'll look into them...

Title: Re: Please report all new forum issues here
Post by: TeraS on June 06, 2018, 04:22:46 AM
And it won't be coming back either...

The unviewed tab causes real issues and there's no simple way to fix the problem.

We leave it in, the servers crash. We take it out, everything's fine. For the moment, until the "NextGen" Gallery gets bullt, the Unviewed is not going to work...

I'm sorry about this, but every time that button gets pushed, the database creates several million rows of data on a temporary basis. That overloads the server and we go down...

As it is now, Unviewed will go to a blank page and no further. For the sake of the site, and the sanity of Hax most of all, this is what will be until we get something better to replace that...

Whenever that is.

I know that the 'Bulk Add Pictures' function in the gallery has always had some issues, but until recently it hadn't really given me any problems.  However, the last few times I've tried to use it the system processes a file to 100%, stops for a short time, then returns an 'upload failed' error indication, and this is repeated for each file in the list.  In some cases, when I check my gallery afterwards, the file is in fact there despite the reported error while other times it is not.  Aside from the ease and speed of using the bulk upload function, I also prefer it because it doesn't require me to enter a title, description or keywords, which I think probably reduces the frequency with which my RP-related doodles intrude into gallery users' searches and suggestions.

I just went through the error log and there seems to be a SSL error. Are you on the most up to date Firefox?

The new server is set to only use modern SSL ciphers and reject all others, which may be causing the difficulties with Firefox.

Should be at least very close to the most recent version.  It's Version 60.0.2 according to the 'about firefox' option in the help menu.  'Check for update' says it's up to date.  Looking back over my gallery, the errors do seem to have arisen only after the most recent update.

Yeah, this might be just a browser quirk. If the problem spreads to more browsers I will put more effort into troubleshooting, but as for now, I can't seem to find any issues with the server configuration.

Don’t know if this has been brought up yet, but the “unviewed” button for the picture archive just gives me a blank screen. When I Just look at the recent picture posts, I can only see the first page (200 images). If either issue could be fixed, it would be greatly appreciated. I don’t get here as often as I’d like, and would enjoy catching up when I can.

Hello!

The Unviewed Button has been disabled as it was causing some severe database issues. In short, when you clicked on that button something in the neighbourhood of ten million temporary rows were added to the database and it either crashed it or made things go to a crawl.

In order not to have the Collective go down over and over again, the Admin took the decision to remove that capability from the Gallery. (We can't remove the button, it's hard coded into SMF and taking it out causes more errors.)

You do have the option of clicking on "Recent Pictures (List All)" at the top of the main Gallery page which will allow access to all of the Gallery images...

Please excuse if this is not the appropriate place to post this but I could be see where else.

Recently, at least the last week but probably longer, the 'New Forum Gallery' has been very slow to
- load the thumbnail images, each can take seconds to load
- view or download images, these can take from 10 seconds to a minute

While my home internet is not blindingly fast it is a lot faster than these images/pages. At the same time other forums and sites were running at a normal speed for my internet.

I did a search earlier looking for the term 'bimbo' and it listed 10 pages or so, but the first page failed to load all thumbnails and I was regularly getting download failures on images or some of dictionaryhash's pdf files.

Thanks, feel free to PM if there is anything I can do to assist or give more information.

Thanks for checking, I would guess it is something on my end, a browser add-on or similar interferring. I did try a different browser to double check and it was running at the same speed. I haven't worked with this framework before but you should be able to disable a button so that people can't click on it so that they don't get the error page.

Either edit the button tag and add in disabled="disabled" or there is CSS you can add either:

display:none; /* to remove it from view */
visibility:hidden; /* to make it invisible but not remove it */
pointer-events:none; /* to disable the ability to click on it */

You should be target that button specifically and only apply the css to that one button based off an ID, class or attribute. I haven't looked at the page where it is located to give a more precise answer.

Not sure if this is just me. I've been having a weird issue when I've tried logging in for the last few weeks.

Operating System: Windows 7
Browser: Google Chrome v73 - Incognito

Basically I'll sign into the website from the front page and my browser will just spin, but if I refresh the page it registers that I have signed in. It doesn't matter if I wait only a couple seconds or a few minutes so long as I just wait to sign on nothing happens but as soon as I refresh I'll be logged in.

To note the issue doesn't happen on my Android phone within Google Chrome.

When I went to the gallery this morning I found that all of my images are flagged as new at individual gallery level but when I view them via my images or on the main gallery page they are not. Huh! Say what?

It's not a massive issue other than the fact the tags are glaringly annoying. Before I start clicking on over three thousand images is there a simple fix?

As I said in my original post If I view the images on the list all page and go beyond the last thirty images I've posted as I have viewed them since the change none of the others are flagged as new. If I view the images through the my images page they are not flagged as new. If I view the images via any of my individual gallery they are flagged as new.

Images from other posters have no new tag whether I have viewed them or not. I've checked in recent comments, most viewed and most commented and there are no new tags however if I check any posters individual gallery folders images are tagged as new unless I have viewed them since the change.

Is that clear enough? If you would like further detail let me know.

Ah, that's terribly weird. Most of those are expected behaviors, but it's weird that after page 30 it doesn't show up anymore. Not sure I can fix that. Might be something to do with cache or something.

What happened to the "Gallery Artists" tab? I usually like to check on some of my favorite artists' uploads rather than browse all new images, but now I can't. The "Members" tab is there, but it's a lot harder to navigate and you can't get to an artist's images from there.

Seems to have vanished but until it's fixed just click on any gallery image and you will find a link to user galleries in orange text just above the image There is a gallery link followed by the link that you need.

Thanks for looking. Not to worry.

Was this tab part of the grey Gallery ones or was it beside the New Gallery link as part of that menu?

EDIT: Nevermind, I know what this is... We'll get it back ASAP.

Try to access the archived site. Got a message saying I am banned. I can’t imagine why, I’ve never done anything inappropriate to my knowledge. How do I get reinstated. Use your ID would be devilish21ca.

You aren't banned...

The archive software is so old that "you are banned" is it's catch all for "something went wrong and I'm going to put this message up because I don't have a good error message"...

I've sent you a PM, please read it as I reset your password!

I've been having difficult accessing the site recently. I've gotten a ton of 504 errors (Gateway Time-out) that seem to happen about 80% of the time I try to access any page beyond the home page (https://hypnopics-collective.net/) . This holds true for the new forum as well as the new gallery. I cleared my cache, tried from different browsers etc etc... and the problem persists. Connection is fine for other sites so I'm pretty confident it's not a problem with my ISP.

There's a PHP error we're trying to sort out, we are aware of this issue and trying to resolve it.

Archive Gallery is unaffected by this issue on my end. Have you checked that? (Account not required)

Same for me, as the one to bring it to Tera and Hax's attention, as I didn't know about this thread.
Plus, having off-site contact helps in the long run.

Hi
I cannot open the last page in the 'A Spell For All' thread. other pages are fine
https://hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/index.php?topic=21244.7760
but clicking on the last page (196) returns a HTTP 500 error using Chrome
https://hypnopics-collective.net/smf_forum/index.php?topic=21244.7800

I have checked this with Firefox, no error is shown, just a completely blank page

Someone's using colours and quotes in the way that breaks the page.

I'll see if I can find the post with it, otherwise I'm going to be deleting a page.

Issue resolved, the thread should appear normally now.

The post that caused the issue has been deleted and reposted by me in the thread as a quote.

Download button now only returning a 0kb file with, oddly, correct name.
I have to work two-fold and also use "Save image as..." over the 0kb file on my PC.
As you can imagine, this is INREDIBLY irritating!
Problem persists in Firefox and Brave browsers, with or without addons enabled.

This issue has been reported and was noted in another announcement thread.

We do not have a solution at the moment for the download button problem.

Hover over the displayed image and click on it, it will open a new window and you can down load the image from that window.

Click it again to close it.

This is the best we can do at the moment until we sort out what's going on.

Minor problem

I am set to receive an email notification for PM's received, the setting
"Notify by email every time you receive a personal message:"

I get the notification twice, as in two emails, certainly not much of a problem. I do not get emails from other people duplicated so it does not appear to be an ISP, email provider or client side issue.

I use Thunderbird email client under Windows 10

Thank you

Sorry to be a bother, but the doubling stopped last night after I posted. It had been doing it for a couple of weeks at least but it seems to have stopped at this time. The last 4 PM's I have received had single emails

Been seeing Error 504's while trying to load the site.
Figured this issue was known since it's been a few days, but I don't see any word about it.
Hoping it gets resolved quickly.

At the moment it's more the level of spamming log in attempts that's the issue.

Popularity most likely does it... We're fairly high on the Google ranks and all...
