Download button in New Gallery not working
« on: October 01, 2021, 07:08:18 PM »
It’s been reported this morning that the download button isn’t working for images on the new gallery.

A work around is to click on the image, it will open in a new tab, then download that.

The PDF download button still works…

Just to note, this issue is still happening for me using FireFox browser, all add-ons disabled. The workaround is working fine

As previously reported, the "Download" button now returns an empty 0kb file. I can get the image with an innacurate name by using "Save Image as...", or with Bulk Image Downloader program I bought.
I currently use the "Download" button to save the 0kb file as a 'placeholder' (with the RIGHT name), then right-click on the image, select "Save image as..." navigate to the placeholder, hit enter, confirm overwrite, click yes, and done.
But neither are ideal and I don't understand why the "Download" button is no longer serving its purpose, has the coding been changed/become corrupted or has the nature of file handling altered?

I am not a website builder but I am curious this may set an annoying precedent for other sites, just as the hated Google 'new and improved' .webp and .webm forms have RUINED many's surfing enjoyment!
(Yes, argues Google, it's a standards conversion affecting only the container but it's incompatible (no backwards compatibility, so lazy and useless) with most image viewers!)

My current (only working for my archive) method is 3 steps and arduous, making everything a slog and time consuming. It's fair to say my enjoyment of the site is hugely reduced, as it must be for everyone.
Do we have a coder out there that can at least explain why we are experiencing this?

For the record, no coding has changed on the Collective. It's the same code we have used from when we started to use the new forum gallery. The code isn't corrupted and the file handling has not changed.

There's no good reason from the server side of what's going on.

That's a bit presumptuous, isn't it? ::) My user experience has been completely unaffected, because for any given image I'm interested it, I open it in browser, look at it, enjoy it, and close it. If I think I might want to revisit it later, I'll "favorite" it. No downloading to my hard disk whatsoever. Didn't even know there was an issue going on. I'm not saying nobody downloads, but I wouldn't say everybody does either. ;)

I have currently the same problem.
I'm using Firefox and Avast Antivir so to rule out problems with both i disabled Avast and used an older Firefox portable version without any addons and also tried Edge and the problem is the same in all cases, 0 Byte downloads.
Also there are no firewall issues or data storage problems on my side (no full hard drive).
So i'm at the end of what i can try on my side.
Luckily the workaround works even if it takes more time to get the filename correct with it.

At this point I'm giving serious consideration to making yet another Gallery...

The only option I can see working is to move to the latest version of... Coppermine.

Now, I know a lot of people aren't going to like that, but with all of the complaints I'm getting about the current issues with the Forum Gallery and we can't find a reason for them happening, this seems to be the only option we have.

This isn't going to happen soon, possibly around Christmas, but Hax and I have to discuss things and figure out how things are going to work...

Comments are welcome for consideration as well as other program ideas that we can look into as options.

Are there other issues people are having besides the download button? Not to discount those who are having problems, but like I said, I didn't even notice it. I could see switching software again if SMF is showing its age and features are falling apart left and right. But the last switch, while necessary, seemed to throw a lot of the userbase for a loop. If it's just this one issue, we'd have to weigh the users who want a functional, one-click download feature against the users who won't cope with a big change to the gallery. I remember it being a huge drop in activity last time.

Hi, I was a member before the last move and I agree with MCaesar, that a new move would be a big pain.

I have been effected by the loss of the download button more that I'd like but I feel moving to a new site would be a greater inconvenience. Just giving a 2nd opinion.

If it was an opportunity to merge both galleries then I would go for it. Other than that the download button bothers me not a jot.

I’m not set in stone on this by any means…

If this isn’t a real issue we can remove the button in the code as a option.

I think removing the button would be a good idea whatever else you decide. I mean without it all you need to do is click on the image and save it. That to me is not hard.

I truly meant no offense, I'm grateful to the Mods & Admins for all they do - great site, just hamstrung of late!
Since the fault is not in the coding or the site itself, it's an external "standards" problem.
I don't visit as often but I'm just one bloke. I said I don't enjoy things as much and that's possibly a lot of people's feelings but the site and Admins are not to blame.
It's some dodgy tech thing.
I think REMOVING the "Download" button is a backwards step as you can currently click on the image and get a weird filename, anyway. Don't kill the placeholder file option for us completists!
I like to archive pics and credit the uploader.
Using the 3-step process with busted "Download" button keeps the correct filename, but it is arduous. I used to visit on my laptop but I'm desktop now as I, personally, have to do a fair bit more.
I can't get to this machine as often but I'm hangin' in there!
I'm sure the best people, who care about the site are on it and looking at alternatives - this is a trying time for all of us.
Good luck, and all the best. Jxx

Jedi, to be clear I'm not miffed at you or anyone else over this...

It is a bother, for which I am sorry for.

At this point, all things considered and the points made, it seems the best thing is to leave things as they are and keep trying to figure out where it's going wrong. Hopefully that means coming up with a solution.

Should anyone discover a means to make things work, please post about it so we can resolve things for everyone...

Most of all, thank you for caring, that means a lot to me.

No worries, dude. It's all too easy to fall into hyperbolic language these days, which is why I always try to point out how little data we have in these kinds of discussions. You know, besides a handful of people saying "I think this" or "I think that." :P

It’s been reported this morning that the download button isn’t working for images on the new gallery.

A work around is to click on the image, it will open in a new tab, then download that.

The PDF download button still works…

Very partial solution.

In firefox, download the add-on Cute Save Button. It creates an icon on the upper left hand corner of any image. When clicked, it downloads the image to a preselected directory without opening up a dialog box. So once you open up the image to a new tab, you only have one more step.

There's also a version of Cute Save Button in Chrome, which I haven't tried.

Can't even begin to guess... Mind you we had to reboot the server a day or so ago...

<fingers crossed>
